1997: The Birth of Social Media when a website called “Six Degrees”. It was named after the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001.
-From there, ICQ was born and most members of Generation X remember ICQ.
-The service that was created shortly thereafter was America Online, with AOL’s instant messenger especially prominent in the social media lineup.
-By the year 2000, around 100 million people had access to the internet, and it became quite common for people to be engaged socially online.
–2003– the website Myspace was the popular place to set up a profile and make friends. Until it started to become stale and founder Tom Anderson & partners sold it for $580 Million to News Corporation. He set off to travel the world. Today, Myspace is still around for music artists and actually making about $800 million in revenue.
–2004-2005: We have Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook with about 1 Billion users worldwide.
–2006 -the popularity of text messaging or SMS inspired Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass and Evan Williams to create Twitter. Which until very recently you could only type 140 characters and now you can type up to 280 characters.
–2010 to today– The rest of the pack, Flickr, Tumblr, Instagram, and Snapchat, and of course thousands of social dating sites and other social sites.
